Os dias correm serenos, o sol teima em continuar e deixa a chuva para dias mais distantes. Gosto do sol quando reflecte nas folhas outonais e lhes dá um cor quase fogo. Não gosto do dia a terminar cedo, baralha-me.
faixas do álbum
1. JOY DIVISION “Love will tear us apart”
This legendary Joy Division song was first recorded on a Peel Session in 1979.
Then the band played it live in “Les Bains-Douches” (Paris) before the single was released on Factory by April of 1980.
Since then, hundreds of bands have covered it, from the most unknown (Boy Division -?- who released a german -??- version) to the most mainstream ones (U2, Simple Minds…)
No bossa nova version has ever been recorded.
2.DEPECHE MODE “I just can’t get enough”
This Depeche Mode hit single (their third with Vince Clark as a mentor) was released on the label Mute by June of 1981.
It went directly to the top ten charts and made the band’s career grow widely.
Dispite of being early criticized, Depeche Mode has become one of the most important pop bands in the world and is still releasing exciting and daring albums.
No bossa nova version of “I just can’t get enough” has ever been, etc…
3.TUXEDOMOON “In a manner of speaking”
No one really paid attention to this song when it was released on Tuxedomoon’s “holy war” album in 1985.
Despite of Martin Gore’s cover on “Counterfeit”, it still remains a quite ignored classic.
4.THE CLASH “Guns of Brixton”
One of the very few songs written by Paul Simonon in The Clash discography.
“Guns of Brixton” is an important track anyway.
It is also one of the best “white reggae” piece of music recorded in this period.
What else can we say about The Clash?
5.P.I.L. “(This is not a) love song”
P.I.L.’s “(This is not a) love song” single was released in 1983.
This track divided the band’s fans as some considered it as a “mainstream” disco song!
John Lydon’s clever, crafty and clear lyrics were not ambiguous anyway.
6.DEAD KENNEDYS “Too drunk to fuck”
This historical Dead Kennedys’ single was released on Cherry Red english label in 1979.
The Dead Kennedys were blacklisted at this time in the USA (due to their “antiamericanist” attitude and songs like “California über Alles”).
Listen to Jello Biaffra throwing in the end of the original version is an….unforgettable experience.
7.THE SISTERS OF MERCY “Marian (version)”
“Marian (version)” is taken from the second Sisters of Mercy’s album “First and last and always” (released in 1985 on Merciful release).
The Sisters of Mercy were huge in France when they released their “Temple of love” EP.
The gigs of this band remain as some great “gothic” experience for many people.
8.XTC “Making plans for Nigel”
As for the Clash, this song is written by the band’s bass player: Colin Moulding.
“Making plans for Nigel”, released as a single on Virgin in 1979, was a huge hit.
It has perhaps lead to some misunderstanding between the band and his audience.
None of hundreds of other songs written by the genius Andy Partridge were that successful.
9.THE CURE “A forest”
First listening to The Cure’s “seventeen seconds” album in 1980 has been a tremendous experience for every new-wave fan.
The sound, atmosphere and production: everything was new in The Cure.
“A forest” with its deep echoed guitars, the half machine drumming, its hypnotic bass line + Robert Smith’s voice is an absolute masterpiece.
10.MODERN ENGLISH “I melt with you”.
Modern English is one of the most forgotten new-wave bands.
Their “I melt with you” single, released on 4AD in 1982, was a huge hit across the world actually.
But the audience grabbed by that song did not agree with the “other” band’s music.
People found it too arty and…modern.
11.THE UNDERTONES “Teenage kicks”.
One of the most famous rock single ever.
The one that made John Peel cry.
All the teenage rebellion resumed in a 4 chords tune.
One of the most covered punk songs ever.
12.KILLING JOKE “Pssyche”
The first Killing Joke album, released in 1980, staggered all the new wave listeners.
You couldn’t hear more violent, radical and dark music at this time.
Killing Joke is still considered today as one the most influent band in rock (rather metal) music.
13.THE SPECIALS “Friday night, saturday morning”
The famous Specials’ “Ghost town” single B-side (on “Two tone” records).
“Friday night, saturday morning” was one of the last songs recorded by the band before they split in 1981.
Each member of The Specials has since turned into a strong career.
Among them, Terry Hall is one of the most talented artists of all new-wave generation.
